Last night we were asked to be substitute grandparents as our friend had to catch a flight and couldn’t take his granddaughter to a promised movie. Puzzled that I couldn’t even remember seeing any movie theatres outside of the capital four hours away, we agreed. We went to Potrero to pick up Naomi and her friend, Arianna. With the two seven year olds buckled in the back seat, we started to our destination. Playa Grande is under thirty minutes and as usual, there are no street names of addresses. We follow the route turning after the soccer field and later taking a fork to the left. Voila! We found the Playa Grande Inn. We were early since we allowed time to get lost. Sunset is always around 6pm and it was an outside theatre. Well, it was a projection screen with a bunch of chairs set up in front of it. About 25 kids showed up for movie, pizza, and sodas. The cool part is that the parents don’t need a babysitter as they are just ten feet away sitting at the bar! We had cocktails and split a calzone (new owner is from Chicago).
We could see the kids and the animated penguin movie from our bar chairs. Free kid movies on Friday brings in the parents for drinks/food. The photos show the movie set up and then when the bar filled with folks. You can see a little of the screen above left of the bartender’s head. While the kids are watching their penguins, the adults are watching the bar TV with the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup! What a concept.
